As your Member of Parliament, I know that good communication is vital. I need to hear from you which is why I welcome that fact that I receive thousands of emails, handwritten letters, telephone calls and people dropping by my office for an advice surgery or chat with my team.
I regularly hold public meetings around the constituency, attend other events and go on the canvass trail. I realise, though, that there is always more that I can do. This is why I am starting a monthly update email to share with my constituents of what I have been doing in and around the local area and in Parliament.
Much of what I do hopefully illuminates how much good is happening across Bolton West and Atherton as well and England and beyond. I certainly have a sense that there is far more to be happy about than we here from the television news programmes.
One of the best and most uplifting insights I get as your MP is to see how many community groups doing great work right around the constituency there are. I recently volunteered with the Friends of Moss Bank Park to help with their gardening activities. They have a great team and really make a difference to the park.
Horwich Heritage Centre were, after a fashion, celebrating the ‘Burning Down of the Bungalow’ with an exhibition on the activities of a local suffragette. This sits along side their other displays marking the town’s history.
I helped secure a £11,621 grassroots sporting grant from the Government for Horwich RMI FC, Blackrod Community Centre and Horwich St Mary’s FC to improve their facilities.
The Speaker gave me an Adjournment debate to highlight concerns on public transport across the constituency from Atherton to Westhoughton and through to Heaton. The railways electrification programme is continuing apace and the buses have now been taken fully into the control of the mayor of Greater Manchester.
Hopefully, over time, I will touch on issues that are closest to your heart but this newsletter is a great opportunity for you to reply with your thoughts and if anything I mention strikes a cord and you want me to take action on.
