Chris Green has welcomed news that English councils, including Bolton and Wigan, will be given access to a multibillion-pound fund for local road improvements under plans unveiled today by the government.
The Bolton West and Atherton MP is urging Bolton MBC to apply to the fund to have the Westhoughton bypass included as part of the project. Mr Green has been campaigning to revive plans for the A5225 since his election in 2015, after the plans for the link road stretching from the M6 at Orrell to the M61 at Chequerbent were shelved in the 1990s.
Transport secretary Chris Grayling has placed particularly focus on the multi-billion pound pot of money as a "bypass fund." The creation of the 'Major Road Network' will be funded by vehicle excise duty.
Chris said: "I very much welcome the government's announcement of a multi-billion pound fund to relieve congestion on our roads- this is good news for local people here in Bolton West & Atherton.
"With the Secretary of State calling this a 'bypass fund', there is clearly scope for government funding to get our much-needed Westhoughton bypass up and running.
"I'll be urging Bolton and Wigan MBC to apply to this fund to make sure that we get our fair share of investment here locally."
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "Getting transport spending right is crucial for the country's future.
"The transport investment strategy sets out a blueprint for how we can harness the power of transport investment to drive balanced economic growth, unlock new housing projects and support the government's modern industrial strategy.
"This government is taking the big transport decisions for Britain's future like HS2 and Heathrow, while driving the biggest investment in roads and rail for a generation. At the heart of our approach is a plan to make transport work for the people who use it and for the wider economy."
