Westhoughton MP Chris Green has written to Bolton Council, urging them to apply for new government funding that could see a much-needed bypass built for the town.
The MP has been campaigning for a bypass to be built from the M6 at Orrell to the M61 at Chequerbent – the old A5225 proposals –to relieve pressure on the roads. He has stated that a relief road, plans for which were first mooted in the 1960s, should be built to cope for the amount of cars on the road now and not used as an excuse to build more houses in the area.
Now, the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, has announced that a new pot of funding for a new Major Road Network has been made available with councils able to apply for funding for schemes from autumn.
In his letter to Bolton MBC, the MP says: “I am writing to urge you to apply for this fund for the A5225 in the autumn and I would be happy to submit a supporting letter for this application.
“I would also be willing to meet with ministers to ensure that Bolton is prioritised for this funding.
“I am committed to working with Bolton Council to ensure that this much needed bypass goes ahead. I look forward to hearing from you.”
