Please find below an update on the work I have been doing to reduce immigration and illegal migrants crossing the English Channel. I know that the current levels of immigration both legal and illegal are a concern for many residents.
As you may be aware, earlier this year, the Government passed the The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act, with the aim of removing asylum seekers from the U.K. to Rwanda. The legislation has now been passed and I am already receiving correspondence from the Home Office notifying me of migrants that have been identified for deportation within my constituency.
The legislation which has been passed by Parliament has moved out of the legal – law making – arena into the political arena where the courts, domestic or international, can apply pressure. This is in part why the question of who the Prime Minister is and the MPs backing him are matters so much. A tough Prime Minister and parliamentary party will ensure that the intention of the legislation to control immigration is delivered while Keir Starmer will begin negotiations with the EU and only take action when it is signed off by the French President.
As a member of the New Conservatives, I backed their ‘Plan To Cut Migration’ report. The Prime Minister has now adopted many of our proposals which has begun the process of substantially reducing immigration into the United Kingdom. There is always more to do but I’m pleased to say that the Prime Minister does listen to his backbenchers like me and you can find out more about the group here: www.thenewconservatives.co.uk
During my time as a Member of Parliament I have successfully worked with Bolton Council and the Home Office to prevent the takeover of the Brittania Hotel on Bolton Road, Ladybridge and the Mecure Georgian House Hotel in Blackrod for the purpose of housing migrants.
I appreciate that many residents have valid concerns over the Government’s handling of immigration, but I do hope that this update makes clear that I have been doing my best to implement tougher policies, even when my views clash with those of my party. I will continue to pursue a tougher approach to migration if re-elected on Thursday 4th July.
