This week the House of Lords will vote on Article 50 – giving the Prime Minister the legal power to put the result of last year’s referendum into action.
Bolton West MP Chris Green MP has called on the Lords to respect the will of the British people and to not bind the Government’s hands in the negotiations before they have even begun.
The House of Lords guaranteed the referendum but they are now opposing elements of Article 50.
The Prime Minister has been clear that Parliament will be able to debate and vote on the issues of Brexit and guaranteed a vote at the end of the negotiations.
The Conservatives have a plan for Britain and it is vital that the Prime Minister can start the process of leaving the EU and the Government can negotiate the very best deal for Britain.
Commenting on the Article 50 vote in the House of Lords, Chris said:
“A majority of the British people voted to leave the EU, including in the Bolton and Wigan boroughs, and this democratic vote should be respected by the Lords. Article 50 is only the starting gun of the process of leaving the EU. There will be time to debate each step so that a fair deal for Britain can be delivered.
“Sometimes decisions are too big for politicians to decide, which is we had a referendum. The British people made a decision and it’s now for politicians to deliver.”
