Hundreds of local people have signed an MP’s petition against calls to build 1,700 houses in Westhoughton.
The proposals to build the houses on green fields near Chequerbent were made as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, being put together by Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Fast approaching 1,000 people have so far signed a petition calling for Council Leader Cliff Morris to use his powers to veto the plan. The petition can be found at https://savewesthoughton.wordpress.com/ or signed in the MP’s office at 15 Market Street, Westhoughton, BL5 3AH
Chris Green said: “Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition so far – I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people who have signed it. It is absolutely clear that the people of Westhoughton do not want these houses and that our roads and transport infrastructure simply could not cope. Local residents have seen many other houses go up but haven’t seen sufficient local investment so there is a huge lack of trust in our council leaders.
“There is still time to sign the petition before we present it to the Council and I would encourage as many people as possible to add their name it if they are also concerned about the impact this huge housing development would have on our town.”
Councillor Christine Wild, who represents Westhoughton North, said: “These proposal will have a serious impact on local people’s lives.
“Our school and health services will not cope with thousands more people moving into the area.”
