Bolton’s Tories have teamed up to campaign for an unusual request – to turn Bolton Town Hall red.
The campaign is part of Red Wednesday, an initiative organised by charity Aid to the Church in Need, that sees buildings of prominence, like Westminster Abbey, lit up red on the evening of Wednesday 23rd November to show solidarity with all those around the world whose blood is shed for their faith.
Bolton West MP Chris Green and Opposition Group Leader Councillor David Greenhalgh are calling on Council Leader, Councillor Cliff Morris, to turn Bolton Town Hall red for the initiative.
Bolton West MP Chris Green said: “I recently visited Northern Iraq where I saw first-hand how much of the Christian community there – one of the oldest in the world – has been forced to flee from Islamic extremists into refugee camps.
“We are very lucky in this country to have freedom to practice our faith, when for many people across the world holding the same belief could cost them their lives.
“I very much hope that we see our Town Hall lit up for Red Wednesday so that the people of Bolton can stand in solidarity with all those persecuted for their faith across the world.”
Conservative Group Leader, Councillor David Greenhalgh, said: “At a time when people of all faiths are persecuted across the world, Red Wednesday is an important initiative and one that I support.
“By lighting the Town Hall red, the people of Bolton can make a show of solidarity with the millions of people who, unlike us, suffer injustices and risk their lives for their faith.”
