Bolton West & Atherton MP Chris Green has welcomed today’s announcement that the government is banning the sale of ivory.
The plans, which aim to protect elephants and combat poaching, will be subject to a 12 week consultation which begins today.
The MP said: “This announcement is very welcome news and puts our country right at the front of global efforts to combat the terrible decline in elephants.
“This is just one of a number of initiatives we are taking on animal welfare – including banning microbeads, increasing sentencing for animal cruelty and putting CCTVs in abattoirs.”
In October 2018, the United Kingdom will host a fourth international conference on the illegal wildlife, bringing global leaders to London to tackle the strategic challenges of the trade.
